MaRS statement

MaRS has an economic mandate with support and engagement both provincially and federally.

MaRS was conceived in 2001 as a not-for-profit and operates as a public-private partnership. Phase 1 of the MaRS Centre opened in 2005, and is fully leased to 100+ innovation tenants. It generates revenue that MaRS uses to fund its entrepreneurship programs and services.

MaRS’ mission is to foster innovation and build Ontario’s knowledge economy – support commercialization of our important discoveries and help entrepreneurs start and grow the next generation of high growth firms.

MaRS is more important than ever to the future of Ontario and our country. Global competition is fierce. MaRS is globally recognized as a leading innovation centre.

A few MaRS facts:

  • Independent impact studies conducted by KPMG show that MaRS has delivered more than $3B in economic impact since launch.
  • We have provided entrepreneurship education to more than 50,000 Ontarians.
  • Young companies receiving advice and support from MaRS raised more than $1B in financing in the last 3 years, and generated more than $500M in revenue.
