Nine Canadian cleantech companies recognized among world’s top 100

Six of the nine Canadian companies on this year’s Global Cleantech 100 list are members of the MaRS portfolio.

TORONTO, January 15, 2025 — This year, nine Canadian companies were named to the 2025 Global Cleantech 100, an annual roster of the world’s top cleantech companies.

Developed by San Francisco–based research and consulting firm Cleantech Group, the list showcases private cleantech companies from around the world that a panel of experts expect will make a substantial impact on the market in the next five to 10 years.

This year’s list saw Canada and the United Kingdom share second place with an equal number of featured companies, behind the United States, which once again dominated. Germany took third place, with six companies recognized.

The nine Canadian companies on the Global Cleantech 100  speak to this country’s continued strength in large-scale energy storage, carbon capture and sustainable battery supply-chain technology. All are poised to help mitigate the climate crisis in tangible, meaningful ways and grow the global economy.

Despite the strong standing, this is the first time since 2015 that Canada has just nine companies on the list, after years of having ventures in the double digits.

“Canada and the United Kingdom continue to lead globally, following the U.S. in the number of companies represented on this year’s list. However, with only nine Canadian companies featured in 2025, this marks a noticeable decline compared to previous years,” says Richard Youngman, CEO of the Cleantech Group. “While some long-standing players have fallen off the list, it raises the question: has Canada’s cleantech innovation pipeline begun to lose momentum? If so, understanding the reasons behind this trend is critical.”

“Canada continues to demonstrate leadership in clean technology, landing once again near the top of this global list of high-impact, high-potential innovators,” says Tyler Hamilton, senior director of climate at MaRS. “The lower representation of Canadian companies this year highlights the need for ongoing investment and support to maintain our competitive edge in this critical area. Innovation remains strong, but government, industry, investors and other stakeholders must work better together to generate opportunities that will see more Canadian cleantech leaders grow and compete globally.”

“We are extremely proud to be included again —our fourth consecutive time on the list — in this talented and passionate cohort of cleantech innovators. The team at Ionomr continues to bring our transformative electrochemical materials to OEMs around the world, providing game-changing components for critical electrochemical systems that are decarbonizing the planet,” says Benjamin Britton, chief technology officer at Ionomr Innovations Inc. “Given our clarity on the future of decarbonization, what is needed most is expedience getting pilots and subsidies deployed and support for innovative companies at all stages from idea through growth, independent of vicissitudes in the marketplace.”
