Discussions of e-health within the Canadian context have tended to focus on the institutional electronic health record – or lack thereof. Often overlooked is the emergence of consumer-centred digital health solutions and their potential impact on the future of health care delivery. The convergence of technologies such as mobile, wireless monitoring and the web promises to empower patients and transform the way physicians diagnose, treat and interact with patients. In an effort to turn the spotlight on this developing sector, we’ve just released a new market report, Consumer Digital Health.

This report draws on both existing secondary research and a series of interviews with key stakeholders to provide both an overview and analysis of this emerging sector from an Ontario perspective. It begins by identifying the fundamental demographic, technological and health system changes that are creating opportunities for entrepreneurs within the consumer digital health space. It then provides an overview of Ontario’s own growing cluster in this space, highlighting initiatives and developments such as:

  • St. Michael’s Hospital’s Health Design Lab
  • Sunnybrook Health Sciences’ MyChart
  • Mount Sinai Hospital’s VitalHub iPhone app
  • The joint UHN/Sick Kids/Saint Elizabeth Heath Care Bant iPhone app.

The report concludes with profiles of five of Ontario’s innovative digital health companies that include insights from the founders on their own commercialization challenges and path to market.

Companies profiled include:

  • INTERxVENT
  • Mensante
  • Cognit
  • Insidermedicine
  • Mediclim.com

Whether you’re an entrepreneur involved in consumer digital health, an investor interested in what Ontario offers, or a member of the general public interested in what technologies exist for health consumers, this report is an essential read – doctor’s orders!
