Canada’s future economic stars meet a changing economy head on

With capital raises, acquisitions and continued growth, it’s been another standout year for companies in the MaRS Momentum portfolio. The latest ventures to join the program include Sensei Labs and Livestock Water Recycling.


GreenMantra, a company specializing in difficult-to-recycle plastic waste, usually focuses on shopping bags that snare the gears of conventional recycling machines. But recently, the Brantford-based firm has detected an opportunity in the 2.7-billion items of PPE purchased to fight the pandemic. In June, it landed a $300,000 investment from the federal government to perfect a technique for turning Canada’s mountain of used facemasks and surgical gowns into compounds for surfacing roads and roofs. 

GreenMantra is one of 68 high-growth companies in the MaRS Momentum program that are helping solve the major challenges Canada faces in such key areas as health care, the environment and workforce re-skilling. This exclusive program is geared to help them scale to $100 million in five years. And, they are growing fast. Momentum ventures raised more than $680 million in capital investment in 2020, which allowed firms to expand into new regions and grow their teams. 

Krista Jones, who founded Momentum to help stimulate the Canadian economy with fast-growing companies, says that close to 80 percent of the companies it supports have seen demand for their services increase over the past 12 months. That’s partly because they are solving the “big, important problems” faced by a planet in the grip of a pandemic and a climate crisis, she says. GHGSat, for instance, provides space-based monitoring of methane emissions from sources like oil wells. With growing urgency to cut carbon emissions, demand for its services is soaring. The company has grown its workforce from 30 to 100 people and plans to launch eight more monitoring satellites by 2023. Back on earth, BrainBox AI, which makes heating and ventilation systems more flexible and efficient in commercial buildings, is benefitting from the shift to less regular work patterns. It has quadrupled the number of buildings its systems are in, to more than 160. 

It’s a dramatic turnaround from when the  Momentum portfolio was announced last year — it was feared Canada would face a lost generation of entrepreneurs as customers and financing dried up as a result of the pandemic. “But there has been a global acceleration of investments in the types of businesses that Canada creates,” says Jones. “We actually saw a massive influx of capital into the companies that we support.”

The milestones are now coming in thick and fast. So far this year, 14 Momentum companies have seen funding rounds or exits, including four that raised more than $100 million each. Prodigy, which gamifies math education, closed a $159-million funding round, one of the largest ever for a North American education technology company. Meanwhile, lithium battery recycler Li-Cycle recently went public through a SPAC that values the company at $1.9 billion. In total, companies supported by Momentum have made more than $1.1 billion in revenues and employ more than 9,000 people.

These companies thrived because they quickly adapted to fast-changing market conditions over the past year. But challenges remain. Supply chains have still not returned to normal and protectionist voices are getting louder in the United States. Remote working is also becoming a double-edged sword for smaller firms as corporate giants cast their nets wider than ever in search of talent.

Still, Jones is more convinced than ever that the ventures in Momentum are on track to hit their goal of $100 million in revenue by 2025. “These companies now have an increased chance of success,” she says. “They might not hit the $100 million mark sooner, but their pathways to it have been de-risked by the amount of capital they’ve been able to raise.”

The program is funded in part by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario. The latest additions to the Momentum portfolio over the last few months include Sensei Labs and Livestock Water Recycling.

Differentiating factor: These maps help businesses, governments, NGOs, as well as telecommunication and insurance companies make better data-driven decisions much faster and at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods of land surveying. Ecopia has mapped every building and road in sub-Saharan Africa to help humanitarian organizations improve healthcare delivery and develop sustainable infrastructure.

Recent developments: Ecopia has partnered with Swedish tech company Hexago to create a detailed 3D map of the entire United States using high-resolution aerial photos. The map will include the precise location and height of every structure, road and tree in the country. It will be used for better flood modelling, insurance risk assessments and transport planning. Plus, in August, the company announced plans to create a high-definition map for the City of Toronto, which will be used as a test-bed for autonomous vehicles and smart-city applications.

Latest milestone: A member of 2021’s Global Cleantech 100, Effenco recently partnered with Derichebourg Environnement to electrify 157 vehicles in Montreal and Paris. And the company, which is also one of 10 Climate Champions in Mission from MaRS: Climate Impact Challenge, is set to release a new powertrain that will allow users to operate trucks at the same upfront cost of diesel-fuelled counterparts.
